Geneology Website
Hello, I'm Jack Bayes, welcome to my website.

The site is best read on a Tablet, Laptop or Desktop.  It doesn't work well at all on a mobile.  I'm afraid I don't have the skills or the know-how to adapt or structure the content to work on a mobile;  so for that I apologise.

I feel fortunate and proud to have been born in Worcester, the historic City in the heart of England.

Worcester's greatest son is the much loved composer, Sir Edward Elgar and the City is, of course, the home of 'Lea & Perrins';  the Original and Genuine Worcestershire Sauce.

Here is the beautiful old Cathedral and the bridge over the River Severn.  I now live in Yorkshire, but in my heart, this historic old City will always be home.

My Bayes ancestors hail from the North-East Midlands of England, not far from where I live now, (see the top-left box of the list, below, for the page of my Bayes genealogy).

There are also pages on other branches of my ancestry and also of my wife of 50 years, Sylvia.

Also added are pages on other interesting Bayes families.

For access to all these pages, please hit the appropriate 'arrow' buttons.

In the following pages, you can see details of:

Most of the activity on the Internet researching the name of Bayes appears to be from people in the United States of America.    In 1989, the total population of folk called Bayes in the USA was estimated at 2000, most of them living in Ohio.

However, there are about as many Bayes' in the UK.  There are more Bayes' living in Northamptonshire than in any other county.  I made a rough map, shown left, which gives an idea where folk called Bayes were in the UK, made up from information I had of 1989 vintage.

Note that there are very many in Northamptonshire, also the 'hot-spots' in London and Birmingham, (as they are the largest conurbations), but also groupings in North Worcestershire, Lincoln, and scattered around the County of Yorkshire;  places like  Sheffield,  Bridlington, Hull and particularly, Scarborough.

Out of curiosity, I searched for any roads, streets, etc. in the UK called Bayes.
As far as I know, at the moment, there are six:

    Bayes Close, London, SE26.
Bayes Lane, Forncett St. Mary, Norwich, NR16.

Bayes Court, North Walsham, Norfolk, NR28,

    Bayes Road, Skegness, Lincolnshire, PE25.
Bayes Row, Hunmanby, Filey, North Yorkshire, YO14.
    and
    Bayes Street, Kettering, Northamptonshire, NN16.

(Tom Bayes of Rothwell, Northamptonshire,  kindly supplied me with the picture of the street name sign shown at the top of this section.  His Father, Maurice Bayes, used to work in Bayes Street, Kettering and was Mayor of the Borough in 2006/7.   Also, t
hanks to Jacqueline Bayes, for the following international reference):

Bayes Road, Grahamstown, Eastern Cape, 6139, South Africa.

Needless to say, if you know of any more Bayes Roads, Streets, etc., details will be gratefully accepted and the locations added to this list.

In September 2019, my wife and I visited Washington D.C. and were very impressed by this great City and, in particular, the magnificent War Memorials there.  We visited those of the Second World War, the Korean War and the Vietnam War.

At the Vietnam Memorial, I looked for a Bayes entry amongst the war dead and found there was just the one.  On this, a Bayes family history website, I just couldn't leave Thomas unremembered and so here, we have a duty to honour and remember him.

Thomas Joseph Bayes was born, (2 months before I was), on 1 Nov 1948.

By rights, like me, he should now be an elderly man of 75.

But his life was cut short, at just 19 years old, on 6th April 1968.

He was killed in action in Quảng Trị, Vietnam.

Origins of the name - Bayes

Various sources say:

Bays is a patronymic form of the English and French nickname Bay, which described the man with the chestnut or auburn hair, derived from Old French and Middle English bay, bai = reddish-brown.  Bai is a French variation.

Bayo is a Spanish cognate and Baaij, Bay are found among the Dutch.  Bayet is a diminutive French form, and diminutive forms found in Provencal include Bayol, Bajol, Bajolet, Bayoux.

Bays and Bayes are patronymic forms meaning "son of Bay".

Another definition I have seen is:  Patronymic, derived from the old English given name Baega.

There is a school of thought that there is a Huguenot connection.

However, it has to be mentioned, that one theory of the origin of the name is from BASE, meaning illegitimate!

I've added an extra page telling the story of the creation of this site.  Hopefully, you'll find it of interest.

Here is the link to it.

Jack Bayes again!

I hope you find this web site of interest.  I am always open to suggestions as to how to improve these pages.  You may have information to add, or to clarify that given on the site.  Also, (I hate to admit it), there may well be errors!  Whatever the case, please let me know.

Please note my new E Mail address, which is:

(I have added spaces in between each letter of the E Mail address as a form of "address munging", if you'll pardon the expression).
